Chinese or Southeast Asian export work, mid–late 20th century
A charming hand-carved decorative figure depicting a robed male musician standing on an integral plinth and holding a transverse flute to his lips. The figure wears a traditional conical hat and long flowing robe incised with stylised solar and foliate motifs. The reverse is similarly decorated, with additional carved detail to the hair and collar.
Executed in a pale buff stone or composite stone (possibly soapstone or reconstituted stone), the surface showing intentional antiquing with darker rubbed pigment in the incised lines to accentuate the decoration. The modelling is simple yet expressive, giving the piece strong folk-art character and decorative appeal.
